Managing Domains in Plesk

This article explains how domains are managed in Plesk, including what domains represent within the hosting environment, how they are used, how they differ from domain registration, and how to add a new domain to your hosting account.

Understand the domains in Plesk

In Plesk, a domain represents a website hosted on your account. Each domain is linked to a specific hosting space where your website files, email accounts, and configurations are stored.

When a domain is added in Plesk, the system automatically creates a directory for that domain, allowing you to upload and manage your website content.

Domains in Plesk are used to:

  • Host websites and web applications
  • Create and manage email accounts associated with the domain
  • Configure DNS settings and domain-related services

Types of domains in Plesk

Plesk supports different domain types depending on how websites are structured and hosted within an account.

  • Primary domain
This is the main domain assigned to a hosting subscription. It is typically the first domain created and it uses the httpdocs folder in your Home directory.

  • Addon domain
An addon domain is an additional domain added to the same hosting account. It operates as a separate website with its own content and configuration. It has it's own folder inside your Home directory.

  • Subdomain
A subdomain is a subsection of a main domain, created using a prefix (for example, blog.example.com). It is used to organize or separate parts of a website and it also has its own folder in your Home directory.

  • Alias domain (domain pointer)
An alias domain points to an existing primary or addon domain. It displays the same website content as the target domain but does not have its own separate website directory.

Add a new domain in Plesk

You can add a new domain in Plesk to host a website or application.

  1. Log in to your Plesk.
  2. Go to Websites & Domains.
  3. Click one of the following buttons:
    • Add Domain
    • Add Subdomain
    • Add Domain Alias

  4. Follow the instructions on the screen depending on what domain type you are adding.
  5. Click OK to complete the setup.

Once added, the domain will appear under your list of hosted domains and can be managed independently.
