Things You Need To Do When Buying an SSL Certificate
This article outlines the required actions during the SSL certificate purchase process, from order placement to certificate issuance. It focuses on what is required to complete activation and validation so the certificate can be issued.
Overview of the process
When purchasing an SSL certificate, the following actions are required before the certificate is issued:
- Provide a Certificate Signing Request (CSR) if required
- Complete domain control validation (DCV)
- Complete additional validation for certain certificate types (if applicable)
- Certificate issuance
Provide the CSR
A Certificate Signing Request (CSR) is required to activate the SSL certificate.
During the order, you will be asked where your website is hosted:
- If you select Another Provider, you must provide a CSR generated from your hosting server.
- If you select Crazy Domains hosting, we will generate the CSR for you.
If the CSR submitted is invalid or does not match the domain, you will receive a request to provide a new one.
Complete domain control validation (DCV)
Domain Control Validation (DCV) confirms that you have control over the domain associated with the SSL certificate.
By default, DCV is completed using a CNAME record. If we managed your DNS, this step may be completed automatically. Otherwise, you will receive a notification with the required DNS record and the steps to complete the validation.
Complete additional validation (if required)
Some SSL certificates require additional validation beyond DCV.
- Wildcard (OV) SSL certificates may require additional validation steps
- Extended Validation (EV) SSL certificates require business verification
If additional validation is required, we will send you an email with the required instructions and any documents needed to complete the process.

Certificate issuance
Once all required steps are completed:
- The CSR is accepted
- Domain control validation is successful
- Any additional validation is completed
The SSL certificate will be issued and made available in your account.
